Triggers in 2024: one trigger can now do the work of five

In 2024 Outreach triggers learned to branch, watch individual fields, run on dates and hand tasks to a team. If your triggers were built before then, there’s probably a simpler way now.

What it actually does

A trigger watches for something to happen to a record, like a prospect being created or an opportunity changing stage, and then does something: adds a tag, starts a sequence, creates a task or sets a field.

Through 2024 Outreach added five upgrades. Branches let one trigger take different actions depending on conditions. Field-change triggers fire when a specific field changes. Scheduled triggers run before or after a date. Tasks can go to a team in rotation, and later to whoever holds a job role, such as the CSM on the account.

Who it's for

Admins and RevOps build triggers. CSMs, account managers and AEs get the tasks and sequences they kick off.

Why it matters

Renewals, onboarding and handoffs run on time without anyone keeping a spreadsheet of dates.

How it grew, 2022–2024

FEB
Branching conditions: one trigger, several condition-and-action branches.
MAY
Field-change triggers: fire when a field changes, changes from a value or changes to a value.
AUG
Time-based triggers and team queues with round-robin task assignment.
NOV
Assignment by job role, such as the CSM on an opportunity, with roles synced from Salesforce or created in Outreach.

How to set it up

  1. Open Triggers

As an admin, go to Administration › Workflow automations › Triggers and click Add Trigger.

  2. Pick the object and event

Name the trigger, choose the object (prospect, account, opportunity and others) and the event: created, updated, or Scheduled for a date-based trigger. For a scheduled trigger, pick the date field and how long before or after it should run.

  3. Add conditions and branches

Set the conditions with any or all logic. For a field-change trigger, pick the field and choose whether it changes, changes from a value or changes to one. Add branches when different conditions need different actions.

  4. Choose the action and owner

Add the action. For a task, you can assign it to a team so it rotates between members, or by job role.

  5. Turn it on

Save, then switch the trigger on from the Triggers list. Triggers don’t run until they’re enabled.
