Custom Objects: bring your own data into Outreach

Since August 2024, admins can add their own objects to Outreach, link them to prospects, accounts and opportunities, and use them to filter and automate.

What it actually does

Outreach comes with prospects, accounts and opportunities. Custom Objects let you add your own, like subscriptions, locations or support cases, with typed fields such as numbers, dates and dropdowns.

A lookup field links a custom object to a standard one, which adds a tab of related records to that page. You can sync it with your CRM, control who sees it, fire triggers off it and, since November 2024, filter prospects by it to build sequence lists.

Who it's for

Admins and RevOps build and map the objects. Reps use the data on records and in lists.

Why it matters

Data that used to live only in the CRM, or nowhere, can drive who gets sequenced and when.

How it grew, 2022–2024

AUG
Custom Objects with typed fields, lookups, views, API access, permissions and triggers.
AUG
Typed custom fields on opportunities.
NOV
Enhancements: Dynamics sync, historical loads, bulk edit, delete and export, related lists and filtering prospects by custom records.
NOV
Typed fields for prospects and accounts, required fields and sorting by custom fields.

How to set it up

  1. Create the object

As an admin, go to Administration › Records › Custom objects and click Create object. Choose the names carefully: the internal name can’t be changed later.

  2. Add fields and links

On the Fields tab, add fields and pick each type. Add a Lookup relationship field to link to prospects, accounts, opportunities, users or another custom object.

  3. Decide what people see

Use the Record customization tab to choose list columns, and optionally add the object to the main navigation from its General tab.

  4. Set permissions

For each profile, set view, edit, create and delete access under Administration › User Management › Access Control. Owner-based access needs a user lookup field marked as the record owner.

  5. Map it to your CRM

Go to Administration › Integration › CRM › Add mapping, pick the CRM object and the Outreach object, then set fields, direction and frequency.

Steps paraphrased from Outreach’s How to Create and Edit Custom Objects, Setting Up Custom Object Permissions and Configuring Custom Objects CRM Sync articles, which describe the current version. Menu names can change; check them against your org.
